Esa Kripanik

Carving

Esau chooses blocks of stone which he then cuts up into smaller pieces which are easier to work with to create his carvings. He carves a polar bear out of one piece, carving animal shapes into the bear’s sides. He then carves a curved tail with animals on both sides out of another piece of stone.

Parts

Part 1

Searching for Stones

Esau takes his skidoo just outside of town, to dig under the snow to find a good piece of stone to work with to create his carvings. He brings the stones back to the office, and then cuts smaller pieces off it before beginning to roughly shape the smaller pieces of stone into the figure of a polar bear.

Part 2

Polar Bear

Using the grinder, Esau continues to shape the polar bear, its form appearing out of the block of stone. A crack in the stone appears as Esau is working with it, then a piece of the polar bear breaks off.

Part 3

Carving the Polar Bear

Esau adapts his polar bear to incorporate the piece that cracked off, continuing to shape it inside the office.

Part 4

Crack in the Polar Bear

Esau continues to carve the polar bear, the legs and face become more defined. Esau grinds the sides of the carving, the darker area of the stone being harder, changing colour as he works with it.

Part 5

A new Polar Bear

Esau cuts a new piece of stone from the larger stones they gathered in the first episode. Esau starts to grind the stone outside, making the rough outline of the second polar bear carving he wants to make from this piece of stone. Once the rough shaping is done, Esau uses a pencil to outline the figure on the stone, before continuing to shape it with the grinder.

Part 6

Repairing tools

This episode begins with Esau repairing his grinder before continuing to shape the polar bear, while Pakak and Nymon watch. Esau changes to using a different tool to sand the polar bear.

Part 7

Animals with the Polar Bear

Esau draws the animals he will be carving, onto the sides of the polar bear, adding the fur details to the sides as well. He rinses off the carving and then places it on the stove to dry. Jerry, Esau and Pakak sit and have coffee while waiting for the carving to dry.

Part 8

Cutting the whale tail

Esa cuts another piece of stone off one of the big blocks found in Episode #1 to create a new carving. He works on shaping it and cutting pieces off to get the rough shape he wants.

Part 9

Talking and Carving

Esau, Nymon, Pakak and Jerry sit trading stories over coffee before Esau goes back to grinding the new carving outside. The tail carving appears out of the rock Esau is working with.

Part 10

Animals with the Whale

Esau traces animals onto the tail with a pencil, before carving them into the stone. He then sands the area around the animal carvings, making them stand out more on the tail carving.
